Hunter’s Point South Waterfront Park

Hunter’s
Point South Waterfront Park is phase one of a larger master plan that
encompasses the transformation of 30 acres of post-industrial waterfront on the
East River in Long Island City and includes the largest affordable housing
building project in New York City since the 1970’s. Surrounded by water on
three sides, Hunter’s Point South is a new model of urban ecology and a
laboratory for innovative sustainable design.
We studied
the project and were interested in the way the site is shaped compare to the surrounding
buildings, that have very strict geometrical form. A fact that is highly shown
through the perfectly rectangular blocks and the towering height of the
buildings. However, as it approaches the park, it becomes much more natural,
more organic. The height of the structures is reduced, and their
shape imitates the shape of the park and the waterfront, which has been
naturally formed by the energy of the waves.
Moreover,
the site imports a large amount of vegetation in the city, making it more
environmental friendly and a much more pleasurable place to be in. For this
cause, we zoomed in specific spots to show the connection between the city and
the park by making plans and sections of these locations.
