Exercise #1: Analysis of the area (Aylin Aşır, Şeyma Akcan)

The Project site covers National Tourist Organisation of Greece Campsite in Patras. We visited this area and we searched for the main factors that constituted it on a large scale.

It is located next to the beach and in a region where the green areas are concentrated. It is isolated from the rest of the city by staying between sea and intense green areas. Housing is not very busy, and the houses are generally in villa type that gardens are a property of someone. According to our observations, the site is generally used by local people in the case of it is isolated from the rest of the city. Even this area is for camping, the presence of other activities and the physical features of the site attracts people here.

The terrain in which the campground is located has a collective character due to its physical characteristics and the accessibility of the roads to this area. On the other hands, thanks to the car and the pedestrian route parallel to the sea to the south part of the area, and the positioning of the green in this parallelism, there is a continuity in one direction.
Pedestrian and bicycle ways generally work together. Generally, people benefit from the roads for running and riding bike etc. However, all parts of the roads are not proper for it since there are no designed roads for these kinds of activities.

We realized that green is a crucial factor that controls human’s movement, orientation, and perception of the site. We first analyzed it on a larger scale and after we searched for the relation between green and human, sea.

Green areas create different zones according to their usage. The green along the seashore, integrated with the relation between sea and people. We observed different activities through the seaside. (One side of the green land has been designed and the trees are planted to have a grid-like texture. On the other side, the trees settled in a more natural way. This affects the movement of people.  In organized part, people act collectively, in the unorganized part people act freely and separated through the seashore. Reeds lie down along the way that goes through the sea. These plants restrict and frame the view and orient people’s look and movement through the way. Reeds and trees block the visual and physical connection with the opposite side of the sea. This provides people concentrate on seaside and continuity of their movements.

According to analysis, we observed that there are two different conditions occurred on the site and they don’t have a strong relationship with each other.
We specified two zones that include gridal organized part of the camping area and unorganized and linear part of the site. The reasons that we choose this two-part are, people generally prefer to use these parts and these two are so close the breaking point that distributes people to the site in two directions.

Even the activities that are done in these different zones are similar, the way of doing these activities are different. While in part activities fallow grid, in other part people act freely along the seashore.
The First zone is introverted since the current structures, intense green and gridal organization direct people's movement to the inner side. In the second case, movement front to sea thanks to the linear organization and the border of green.
